Serbia and Slovenia Draw 1-1 in UEFA Euro Qualifier
Last-Gasp Header from Jovic Earns Point for Visitors
Ljubljana, Slovenia - Serbia substitute Luka Jovic headed a last-gasp equalizer to salvage a 1-1 draw for his side against Slovenia in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier on Sunday.
Slovenia had taken the lead through a first-half penalty from Josip Iličić, but Jovic's late header secured a valuable point for Serbia.
Slovenia's Bright Start
Slovenia started the match brightly and had the better of the chances in the early stages. They were rewarded for their pressure when Iličić was brought down in the box by Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajković. The Atalanta forward stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, giving Slovenia a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Serbia's Response
Serbia struggled to create chances in the first half, but they improved after the break. They introduced Jovic from the bench, and the Real Madrid striker made an immediate impact. He had a couple of chances to equalize, but he was denied by Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Jovic's Late Equalizer
As the match entered the final stages, it looked as though Slovenia would hold on for the win. However, Jovic had the last say. In the 95th minute, he rose highest to head home a cross from Filip Kostić. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations among the Serbian players and staff.
Significance of the Result
The draw leaves Serbia and Slovenia level on points in Group B after two matches. Both sides will be looking to improve their position when they face off again in the reverse fixture in September.
